Gun Violence

  • On May 25, 2017, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, Michael Apodaca, age 47, Gilbert Apodaca, age 34, were arrested. Las Cruces police were dispatched after a report that the cousins were creating a disturbance at a hotel. Michael Apodaca was found inside the hotel with a 28-year- old woman whom he was threatening with a .22 caliber handgun. The woman was not injured and no shots were fired.   • On May 20, 2017, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, a warrant was issued for the arrest of Lucien Charles Mclean, age 47. Investigators have learned that Mclean was stalking his ex-girlfriend on multiple occasions between May 6 and May 20. On May 20, he was driving a pickup truck and aggressively followed her. She was a passenger in a friend’s car. Officers determined Mclean was armed with a handgun at the time. SOURCE: LAS CRUCES POLICE DEPARTMENT
  • On May 18, 2017 in Las Cruces, New Mexico, police say a late night shooting at a residence left three men wounded. Police say that two of the men are hospitalized in critical condition after being shot multiple times and that the third wounded man’s injuries are not life threatening.   • On May 6, 2017 in Las Cruces, New Mexico, Adam Alvarez, 31 years old, was charged with one count of shooting at or from a motor vehicle and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Alvarez got into an argument in the store with two men. The argument continued into the parking lot at Albertson’s grocery store, where Alvarez allegedly retrieved a handgun from a car and started firing at the men as they drove away. The rounds struck two vehicles, one of which was occupied by a six year–old girl. No injuries were reported. SOURCE: LAS CRUCES POLICE DEPARTMENT
  • On April 22, 2017 in Las Cruces, New Mexico, Horacio Moreno, age 53, was arrested for pushing his wife from a moving vehicle. Moreno arrived at the residence of his wife’s friends. After threatening her, she climbed inside his car. Neighbors noticed her husband was armed with a handgun. Police believe that as they approached an intersection, Moreno punched her in the face, and pushed her out of the car. SOURCE: LAS CRUCES POLICE DEPT.
  • On April 22, 2017, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, Benjamin Montoya, age 21, was killed at the Townhouse Motel. The suspect, Joel Arciniega-Sanez, age 21, was unharmed and arrested. SOURCE: U.S. GUN ARCHIVE
  • On April 13, 2017, in Las Cruces New Mexico, there was a midday shooting along one of the city’s busiest intersections. One man was hospitalized and another man is in police custody. One man was shot in the torso, police said. He was transported to a local hospital and is in stable condition. Police did not release the name of the suspect or the victim.   • On April 9, 2017 in Las Cruces, New Mexico, U.S. Customs and Border protection investigated an agent-involved shooting incident. A male suspect approached the U.S. Border Patrol Las Cruces immigration checkpoint on I-25. The vehicle was referred to a secondary inspection. Once there, as the driver was being questioned, he brandished a handgun and fired one shot through the vehicle in the direction of the agents. Agents returned fire at the driver, who was then air lifted to a local hospital. SOURCE: US BORDER PATROL
  • On March 31, 2017, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, Kyle Joshua Brown was arrested after shooting at his estranged wife and her new boyfriend. Brown’s estranged wife and her boyfriend, age 28, were driving when Brown allegedly fired multiple rounds toward the couple in their car. No major injuries were reported.   • On March 26, 2017, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, police arrested Adrian Salas, 31-years-old, who was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of negligent use of a deadly weapon.   • On March 7, 2017 in Las Cruces, New Mexico, an 18 year-old man shot himself as he tried to run from the police. He was pronounced dead at an area hospital. Las Cruces police had been dispatched after a report of a man with a handgun at an apartment complex. Detectives learned that he threatened his sister’s boyfriend and had fled before the police arrived. He shot himself while running from the police. SOURCE: LAS CRUCES POLICE DEPARTMENT
  • On February 28, 2017, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, a Farmington man, 24 year-old Joseph Klenish, was taken into custody on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Sheriff officials said the victim called 911 regarding a road rage incident. He told police Klenish was sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle and allegedly pointing a handgun at him as he was driving on the freeway. SOURCE: ASSOCIATED PRESS
  • On February 11, 2017, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, Joseph Nicolas Crespin, Jr. age 35, fired at a 24 year-old woman and her father. Las Cruces police were dispatched after a report of gunfire. Detectives learned that Crespin had been in disagreement with them the night before. He returned to the woman’s residence the next day and continued the argument.   • On February 9, 2017 in Las Cruces, New Mexico, police were dispatched to the parking lot of IHOP because of a report of an armed robbery. A woman was sitting in her vehicle when a man approached and displayed a handgun and demanded she hand over her wallet and cell phone. The woman was not physically injured.   • On January 24, 2017, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, Jeremy Lopez-Robiedo, age 29, was killed after attacking police officers. Las Cruces police officers were working in conjunction with the U.S. Marshal's task force in an attempt to apprehend Lopez-Robiedo. The Las Cruces officers and U.S. Marshal struggled with Robiedo, who was armed with a knife. Robiedo slashed the knife at one of the officers who shot him. Robiedo was pronounced dead at the hospital. The shooting is being investigated by an officer-involved task force.   • On December 9, 2016 in Las Cruces, New Mexico, police investigated a road rage incident resulting in gunfire and injury to a man. The 30 year-old man was transported to the hospital with one gunshot wound. SOURCE: LAS CRUCES POLICE DEPT.
  • On December 5, 2016 in Las Cruces, New Mexico, a shooting claimed the life of 36 year-old Joshua Dunne. Officers were dispatched to Dunne’s residence when a relative indicated to police that Dunne was possibly suicidal and could be armed. Officers located him at a motel and attempted to negotiate. Police department swat and hostage negotiations were activated. Shots were fired and Dunne was struck at least once and died at the medical center.   • On November 7, 2016 in Mesilla, New Mexico, police investigated what is believed to be a murder suicide that claimed the lives of an elderly couple. The bodies of a man and a woman, whose identities have not been revealed, were discovered by a family member. Both appeared to have suffered from gunshot wounds to the head.   • On October 26, 2016 in Las Cruces, New Mexico, the Las Cruces police department investigated an incident that left two men injured, one with a gunshot wound and the other with stab wounds.   • On October 25, 2016 in Las Cruces, New Mexico, a New Mexico State University student was hospitalized in stable condition after being shot in the leg. It happened during a late night confrontation with a New Mexico State University police officer on the main campus in Las Cruces. Two officers responded to a report of a man with a gun at apartments on the campus. The officer shouted commands at the armed student who failed to comply before the officer opened fire.   • On October 25, 2016 in Las Cruces, New Mexico, a Las Cruces man has been accused of firing two shots at his ex-wife while having an argument. Dona Ana County Sheriff’s officials say 58 year-old Gregory Knight was arrested. The woman told deputies that Knight shot her twice with a handgun. Authorities say he is being held at the county detention center on aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. SOURCE: KRQE NEWS
  • On September 24, 2016 in Las Cruces, New Mexico, a suspect was taken into custody after a two and half-hour standoff. The Las Cruces police department and area swat teams responded to the situation after a man wanted on a felony warrant barricaded himself in a residence. SOURCE: LAS CRUCES SUN-NEWS
  • On September 20, 2016 in Las Cruces, New Mexico, Christopher Lauster, age 35, was killed in a gun shooting incident, currently being investigated as a homicide.   • On September 8, 2016 in Las Cruces, New Mexico, three men were arrested after a drug bust. 31 year-old Ricardo Kelly is being held at a county detention center without bond. He is accused of being a felon in possession of a firearm. SOURCE: ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL
  • On August 21, 2016 in Las Cruces, New Mexico, Las Cruces police officers shot and killed a robbery suspect. The fatal shooting happened on a bridge over I-25. Authorities said the man’s identity wasn’t known but it was believed he had stolen a pick-up truck. The man was armed with a knife when he confronted officers.   • On April 13, 2016 in Las Cruces, New Mexico, officers were called to a reported domestic dispute.   • On December 14, 2015, in Dona Ana County, New Mexico, 3 people were arrested after a robbery and shooting. Las Cruces police say that 18 year-old Cori Runnels and 23 year-old Cayla Blue are being held on suspicion of shooting from a vehicle, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy.   • On May 12, 2015 in Las Cruces, New Mexico, an 89 year-old man shot and killed his 65 year-old son and took his neighbor hostage at the Hallmark Independent Living Center. Guns are not allowed at the center. SOURCE: EL PASO TIMES

  • October 28, 2014 in Las Cruces, New Mexico, Santa Fe County Sheriffs Deputy Tai Chan shot and killed his partner in a Las Cruces hotel after an alcohol infused fight that began at a local pub and ended with the shooting of Jeremy Martin in the hotel stairwell.
