Gun Violence

  • On July 25, 2017, in Algodones, New Mexico, Lane Reed, age 23, fired at pursuing officers during a chase on I-25. Reed had robbed a convenience store, pointing a gun at the clerk and his granddaughter. He took the clerk’s truck, shooting at police officers who were following.   • On March 11, 2015 in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, 18 year-old Nicholas Chavez was arrested for allegedly shooting at a Good Samaritan who was protecting a woman at a gas station when Chavez began aggressively flirting with the woman while she was pumping gas. SOURCE: KRQE

  • On August 8, 2014 in Algodones, New Mexico, state police responded to a 911 call by the owner of a bed and breakfast who heard shots being fired. When the police arrived, a man was shooting a high-powered rifle and making threats. The officers entered into a dialogue and then opened fire. The shooter is in critical condition.   • On July 26, 2009 in Sandoval County, New Mexico, police shot and killed 62 year-old Joseph Henry Burgess who had been robbing a remote vacation cabin. Burgess was wanted for the murder of several couples. SOURCE: LOS ANGELES TIMES
  • On August 14, 2014, a 17 year-old pointed a high-powered rifle at deputies. Deputies told him to put down the firearm. When he did not comply, deputies shot the teen. The teen was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. SOURCE: KRQE NEWS
