Luna County Gun Violence

  • On October 6, 2018, in Deming, New Mexico, Eduardo Pena, 27 years old, was shot while he and others attempted to rob people at a home where multiple people were gathered. An altercation followed, and one of the home’s occupants shot Pena, who later died at the hospital. The woman who was with Pena was also shot and remains in critical condition. Source: Sun News
  • On July 19, 2013, in Deming, New Mexico, 64-year-old Robert Kratz was found sitting in his living room with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His wife, Jean Kratz, was found dead in bed with a gunshot wound in the side of her head. Source: Las Cruces Sun-News
  • On July 6, 2015, in Deming, New Mexico, 37-year-old Richard Perez was found shot. He died later that day at the hospital. Robert Tafoya was issued an arrest warrant. Tafoya is a convicted felon. Source: KRQE News 13
  • In 2011 in Columbia, New Mexico, the mayor, police chief and village trustee pleaded guilty to federal charges of trafficking AK-47 style pistols to a Mexican drug cartel. Source: CNN News
  • On May 7, 2007, in Columbia, New Mexico, 2 men were shot and killed and a third seriously injured by an AK-47 in a shootout on the border. Source: NewMexicoPolitics.Net
  • On December 20, 2005, in Deming, New Mexico, a shooting occurred inside a Walmart. A 6-year-old girl, an employee, and a customer were all wounded. Store employees caught one suspect. Another suspect was arrested by the police later that day. Source: NBC News
  • On November 19, 1999, in Deming, New Mexico, a 13-year-old armed student shot and killed a 13-year-old girl at Deming Middle School. She was shot in the head. Source: Albuquerque Journal
