Six years ago, a gunman killed twenty first graders and six school staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School. New Mexicans To Prevent Gun Violence was formed in the following weeks by a group of concerned citizens who had had enough of the gun violence that was starting to define both our state and country.
Gun violence in our schools has only gotten worse. These atrocities seem to be the new norm. Our youth live with the daily reality that today may be their last when they go to school. They live in fear. Plain and simple. That is why the majority of the work we do at New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence is with our youth.
We still have a lot of work to do, but we are not giving up. If we do, then we give up on all those who have lost a loved one to gun violence.
Today, we join all families in remembering those who have been killed by a gun.
